Now, if more online content only had surround sound encoding it would be amazing. It will pass a perfect digital signal using an optical audio chord from my MacBook Pro to my home surround sound system. You definitely can not beat the price too.
Enjoy. I was disappointed at first with the sound quality using the 3.5 mm cable. This is a lot better than using the 3.5mm Stereo Plug / RCA Plug x 2 Y-Cable. You will need an optical input on whatever device you are trying to run your sound through. Couldn't get an answer from Apple, but I will tell you this. I just bought these and if you own an IMAC this will output your sound into a digital format. After looking around a bit, I found this cable and my disappointment quickly faded and turned into joy.
Bought this with a 12' optical to connect my macbook pro to my logitech surround sound and it works perfectly. Adapter is small, so be careful you dont lose it.
With this, you can connect directly to your receiver's optical input and it works like it should. Your seeming analog headphone jacket in the Macbook is actually a digital toslink with a different connector. Perfect digital audio.
Some other ones for sale, such as Toslink To Optical Mini Adapter have a milky plastic center that doesn't conduct light as well. If you are connecting this to a computer, especially a Mac Mini where the connector is above the USB ports, you will want a metal one to prevent accidental shearing of the connector in the port when you are messing with other cables. This is a great adapter with glass center and metal jack. The metal outer jack is very solid on this as well and won't easily break off like plastic versions.
